Shadow Games Permissions Post
Sep. 1st, 2013 01:13 pmSO. RIGHT. For those of you who've read/watched Season 0, you know why this is here. For those of you who haven't, well, strap in, because things are about to get crazy.
"Dark Yugi" here is a spirit that was infused into Yugi's body via the Millennium Puzzle when Yugi finished it. He doesn't appear very often because he's only around when he's needed -- and when he's needed, there's heavy, heavy damage.
To put it as simply as I can, Dark Yugi is to Yugi and co what a gigantic trained guard dog is to a little girl. If you hurt Yugi or any of his friends in any way (mental, physical, or emotional), Dark Yugi will appear to dole out a punishment for your sins. (While I don't remember the exact quote and I don't have the early manga at present, he says something like "You will pay for trespassing on the hearts and souls of me and my friends.")
This "punishment" is playing what's known as a Shadow Game with him. Despite what Duelist Kingdom on would tell you, Shadow Games are not strictly with Duel Monsters or cards. Literally anything can be a Shadow Game -- here are a few known ones from the manga:
And so on and so on. Dark Yugi can make a Shadow Game out of literally anything; it isn't the game itself that's important. What's important is that a Shadow Game "brings out the true nature" of those who are in it. Many of those who Dark Yugi has played against have attempted to cheat in some way, which causes them to lose horribly and suffer whatever Penalty Game that Dark Yugi deems fit for the most sinful/prominent parts of their personalities.
SO YEAH. In hopes that things can be hammered out before we have to do things, here's a permissions post for you!
Will you trigger Dark Yugi?: To do so, generally, you have to badly hurt Yugi or his friends in some significant way, as I've seen, and you have to do it willingly and directly. Dark Yugi doesn't dole out judgment to every John Doe who shoves Yugi around, and he doesn't judge those who did what they did under the effects of mind control or coercion of some sort. In those cases, if he knew, the one who made you do it gets the Penalty Game instead of you. I'm assuming for most characters this will be a "no," but I'd prefer if you'd fill out the rest just in case.
Can he win against you?: This one is... a bit problematic. Dark Yugi does not tend to lose. Ever. This is partly because he's quite frankly good at pretty much everything he makes a game out of and is immensely talented with a variety of things, but also partly because of the fact that it's a Shadow Game. As Dark Yugi says, his games are ones that bring out the true nature of people, so even normally subtle villains would find themselves being more overt or obviously evil in such a game. Their heart is being weighed, so to speak, and they can't hide what's truly there. I honestly have no idea how to handle if you'd rather he not win, but if that's the case, we can talk about it.
What's the worst part of your character's personality?: This, alongside with what you did, will determine what Penalty Game your character is inflicted with. As a note, for the sake of fun for players, the Penalty Games are not permanent. Also, none of them will be lethal without your permission.
Is there any sort of "game" your characters would relate to/know?: This is for some OOC ease of mine -- basically, can you think of any games that might be appropriately ironic/fitting for your characters to play against Dark Yugi? As I said before, it can be literally anything, from Tetris to block sliding to a maze to even outright bizarre things. It's all right if you don't know!
Is there anything about your character Dark Yugi might sense?: He's got a very keen perception, bordering on utterly unnerving at times. While he can't, say, go digging into your brain for ideas, he can actually size up a person by even small sections of their actions and figure out what buttons to press to get their real selves to show through.
I think that's about it... I'll add more if I need to!

- Putting a stack of money on your hand and stabbing down as hard as you dare, you only keep what money sticks to the knife. The one with the less money at the end loses.
- Playing "ice hockey" on a giant burning grill with the puck being a vial of nitroglycerin frozen in ice. First to die loses.
- You can only pick one finger to move, and may move it once the game starts. While we don't see many rules about this, the loser was tricked by Dark Yugi and ended up burning to death.
- Putting coins in a shoe alongside a preserved but still venomous scorpion and drawing out as many coins as you can per pull without getting stung. The one with the least coins loses.
